Information abut the town of Civita di Bagnoregio
The beautiful town, which still irradiate all of its charm, is located in a secluded valley in the badlands, a short distance from Montefiascone, Orvieto, Lake Bolsena and the "new" Bagnoregio.
The town is also called "the dying city": only accessible on foot via a steep concrete bridge, in fact, the village is undergoing continuous erosion and violent elements that are bringing down the rocky 'island' on which it rises.
Hotel Italia recommends a hike in this beautiful town of great historical and scenic interest. Founded 2500 years ago by the Etruscans, the city had as many as five doors and stood on a main road that connected the Tiber River and Lake Bolsena, and today can only be accessed from the port of Santa Maria (called “Of The Quarry” too).
What to see: several medieval houses, the church of San Donato, which overlooks the main square, the Bishop's Palace, a mill of the XVI century, the birthplace of St. Bonaventure and the door of Santa Maria itself. The Etruscan token are numerous in Civita, which is why you should also see the small necropolis under the church of San Francesco and the old cave of St. Bonaventure, where St. Francis healed the young Giovanni Fidanza, who later became St. Bonaventure. Worth seeing is also the "Bucaioni," a tunnel of Etruscan that allows access to the town directly from the valley of the badlands.
